Messi’s hated referee Lahoz sent home from World Cup

Referee Mateu Lahoz has been banned from the 2022 World Cup after a controversial performance refereeing the quarterfinal clash between Argentina and the Netherlands.

Lionel Messi was highly critical of Lahoz afterwards, while goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez also called him “useless” and suggested he wanted the Netherlands to win.

In the end, Argentina advanced after winning the penalty shootout, after a thrilling draw that ended 2-2 after extra time.

Lahoz dealt a remarkable 15 cards in the game, and many pundits seemed surprised by his approach to managing the game.

Lahoz was clearly quite unpopular with just about everyone, so it’s no surprise to see that he won’t now have the chance to take charge of any more games at this year’s World Cup.

Argentina will face Croatia in the semifinals later this week, and if they win, they will play the winner of the other semifinal between France and Morocco in the final.
