McAvennie thinks ‘wonderful’ Liverpool star isn’t Premier League-ready despite playing every game for Klopp this term

Frank McAvennie has boldly suggested that Harvey Elliott is not ready for all six English top-flight games in the league’s latest campaign.

The English youngster has been forced back into the spotlight in 2022/23 with injuries to key men allowing the midfielder to benefit from Premier League minutes.

“They are bringing in players all the time. Elliott, what a player, but he is not ready for the Premier League yet,” the former Celtic star told Football Insider.

“He’s up for a game here and there, but he plays all the time and it shows.

“He is a wonderful talent, but it shows how much they miss Thiago, a great player, absolutely wonderful. He is prone to injury, but when he plays he pulls the strings, my God.”

It feels like a harsh assessment of our teen prodigy given that he’s arguably been one of our best middle-of-the-park picks.

Liverpool
Liverpool’s midfield has been a troublesome department for much of the campaign.

Starting the season similarly to the last before suffering a serious injury at Elland Road, the youngster has often been the only bright light for Jurgen Klopp’s men when his team-mates’ performances were found to be lacking.

That said, it’s fair to point out that we’ve sometimes lacked Jordan Henderson’s tactical cunning, with the right flank, where our skipper would usually cover when Trent Alexander-Arnold makes his world-renowned bombing runs, often left exposed. by Elliott’s positioning.

It’s hard to judge the former Fulham star given how dysfunctional the first XI has seen too often this term, though we can accept there is work to be done to help him fully deliver on Klopp’s demands.
