Matej Kovar has today signed a new contract with the club until 2025 with an option for one more year.

In an official statement issued by the club, Kovar put pen to paper and agreed to the new terms. He will then leave on loan to the Czech Republic with Sparta Prague.

Kovar had initially agreed to join Cheltenham on a one-year loan in July.

The club quickly scrapped plans for such a move as they struggled to recruit a substitute goalkeeper to replace David de Gea.

With the arrival of Martin Dubravka, who will cover for the Spanish goalkeeper and compete for the starting spot, it has become more sustainable for Kovar to leave the Theater of Dreams.

The 22-year-old goalkeeper joined United in 2018 from FC Slovácko.

He was first included in the senior squad of the matchday in 2019 in United’s Europe clash against Astana.

Kovar repeated this party last week in his side’s 1-0 win against Leicester, where he was also named to the bench thanks to injuries to Luke Shaw and Aaron Wan Bissaka.
