Martinez Reacts to Ronaldo Goal vs FC Sheriff

Man Utd news: Lisandro Martinez believes Cristiano Ronaldo’s goal for the Red Devils in their 2-0 win over FC Sheriff will be important for the player and the team.

Ronaldo scored Man Utd’s second goal of the game in the 39th minute, converting a penalty earned by compatriot Diogo Dalot. The Portuguese made no mistakes from the spot, to give Man Utd a two-goal lead.

Jadon Sancho had earlier broken the tie in the 17th minute of the game, finishing off a good team move showing great composure.

Ronaldo’s goal against FC Sheriff was also the Portuguese star’s first goal for Man Utd in the 22/23 season. He had entered the game goalless in his last seven appearances for Man Utd.

Speaking after Man Utd’s victory over FC Sheriff, Martinez said the goal Ronaldo scored will be important for his confidence and for the team.

“We know how great Cristiano Ronaldo’s goals are,” said Martinez, quoted by The Mirror. “It is very important that he scored for his confidence and for the team”.

Meanwhile, Ronaldo was linked with a move away from Man Utd in the summer transfer window. The 37-year-old had reportedly asked Man Utd to allow him to leave if they received a suitable proposal.

Ronaldo wanted to play in the Champions League, which Man Utd have failed to qualify for this season after finishing sixth in the Premier League at 21/22. However, interest in Ronaldo was scant and he failed to seal a move from the Premier League side.

Ronaldo hasn’t had a great start to the 22/23 season either. He had missed Man Utd’s pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia for “family reasons”. Manager Erik ten Hag left Ronaldo on the bench for Man Utd’s first game of the 22/23 Premier League season.

He returned to the starting eleven in Man Utd’s next game: a 4–0 loss at the hands of Brentford. Since then, Man Utd have played four games in the Premier League and Ronaldo did not make the starting eleven in any of them. However, he came off the bench in the second half of those games, as he did in Man Utd’s first game of the season.

Ronaldo, however, has started both of Man Utd’s Europa League games this season. He couldn’t help his team win their first game, but he did score a goal when they beat Sheriff in the second.
