Martin Dubravka’s departure swings Man United into action for Bundesliga shot-stopper – Man United News And Transfer News

Manchester United have now set their sights on Borussia Mönchengladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer.

United’s renewed interest in Sommer stems from the departure of Martin Dubravka from the club.

Dubravka’s loan spell from United came to a premature end when he was recalled by his parent club Newcastle.

It is unclear what prompted Newcastle to recall Dubravka, although it has been suggested that the Slovak was the one who requested a return to St James’ Park.

United have now been left with a short man in the goalkeeping department, with Tom Heaton now serving as David de Gea’s main back-up.

That’s why United are now eyeing Sommer, who has been heavily linked with the Red Devils in recent months.

Talksport reporter Alex Crook reports that United are planning a raid for Sommer and will enter into talks with Gladbach about the Swiss goalkeeper.

Crook comments: “Manchester United are ready to bring forward their signing of goalkeeper Yann Sommer after Martin Dúbravka left him shorthanded on the return to Newcastle.

“United hope to persuade Gladbach to let Sommer leave for a reduced fee this month.”

It’s unclear what capacity Sommer would arrive in if a move materialized.

Would he come in as a backup option and just another body to ensure enough coverage between the sticks, or would he be De Gea’s direct competition and potential replacement?

There are big doubts about De Gea’s suitability for Erik ten Hag’s systems, and Sommer is seen as a better fit for the type of football the Dutch coach wants to implement.
