Tommy McCarthy could set up a world title shot with victory in Belfast on Saturday night.
‘The Mack Attack’ takes on skillful Latvian Reinis Porozovs in the main support fight for Eric Donovan’s highly anticipated EU super featherweight title fight, and it looks like he could secure a big world title tilt with victory. .
Manager Mark Dunlop revealed that the former European champion came close to competing for a world strap in the summer. Terms had been agreed with one of the reigning champions, only for the organization the unnamed champion holds a title with to intervene.
The governing body did not believe that McCarthy could participate in a world title fight thanks to his latest victory, arguing that the opponent was not strong enough.
That changes live on TG4 this weekend as the cruiserweight takes on Porozovs, a fighter who has tested some continental prospects in recent fights, and with the champion in question still undefended, the Belfast striker could reopen talks for the world title if he secures a win.
“I was in talks to give Tommy a world title shot, believe it or not, but the strength of the last opponent was not enough for this particular governing body,” Mark Dunlop told Boxing Tickets NI in a detailed interview.
“The [world champion] he was meant to fight that particular opportunity and he hasn’t fought yet, so who knows what this fight could bring for Tommy. Tommy is right in the mix, he’s in the top 20 in the world, so he if he puts on a good performance…”
Regardless of whether he comes next or not, the MHD boss is sure McCarthy will get his shot before it’s time to walk off stage left.
“Let’s be clear, Tommy is not a prankster at all. Tommy McCarthy will come back and he will be a champion again. There is no doubt that he will fight for a world title before handing them over.”
Dunlop also suggests that the Oliver Plunket graduate deserves a chance not only because of his talent, but also because of the willingness he has shown to fight for his career.
“While there may be some cruiserweights out there, there are very few like Tommy McCarthy who are willing to fight anyone. Tommy is a true fighter and I take my hat off to him, he has never refused to fight in his life. One thing he doesn’t have is a padded puck.
