Marco Reus suffers serious injury in Dortmund-Schalke derby

Marco Reus suffers a serious injury

Marco Reus was carried off the field on a stretcher during Borussia Dortmund’s derby with Schalke. The veteran German international appeared to suffer a serious ankle injury in the first half after being brought down by a Schalke defender. Reus was emotionally distraught and covered his face with his hands as he was carried off the field.

Saturday’s Revierderby was the 250th German Bundesliga appearance for his hometown team. Before the match, Reus spoke about how much the milestone meant to him.

“It was always a dream to play for this club, with whose fans I feel connected,” said Reus. “It is great fun to play in our stadium and especially to celebrate a victory with the fans. For me, it is the fulfillment of a childhood dream.”

Marco Reus suffers a serious injury in another setback

Unfortunately, injury problems have plagued Reus throughout his career, particularly for his Germany national team. In fact, Reus has missed more than 70 games with his national team due to injury. The 33-year-old German even mentioned these problems before the Schalke match.

“Of course I had to accept a lot of setbacks, but I couldn’t just say, ‘Okay, now I’m injured again, so I’ll stop!’ It is not that injuries mean that I no longer have incentives to practice the sport that I love so much and that gives me so much joy every day”, Reus said.

“In this regard, it’s actually quite simple: you have to motivate yourself. Patience is required. You have to tell yourself, ‘Okay, this is how things are now, you’ll take care of that too.’ There are much worse things in the world. That’s why injuries are really small things for me.”

How serious Reus’ latest injury is remains to be seen, but his World Cup hopes could be threatened. The star midfielder previously missed the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 and 2020 European Championships due to various injuries. Fans in Germany and around the world expect Reus to play in the next World Cup.
