Manchester United and England left-back Luke Shaw was asked to pick his favorite World Cup goal before the tournament kicked off in Qatar.
As reported on manutd.com, Shaw went for a goal scored and assisted by ex-Reds, in the 2014 tournament.
Robin van Persie’s incredible flying header, assisted by a cross from Daley Blind in Spain’s 5-1 demolition of the Netherlands, was the winner for Shaw.
“I think one that I have in mind, obviously because I think at the time they were both at Manchester United, it was Daley Blind and Robin van Persie,” he said.
It was a goal riddled with United connections, not just to the creators on the pitch but also to Louis van Gaal, who was in charge of the Dutch team that day.
Van Gaal joined United at the end of the 2014 final.
Shaw added that Daley Blind was particularly happy with his part in the goal with him and Shaw talking about it during their time together at Old Trafford.
“I think that goal was incredible. Daley was so happy with his pass that he talked about him when he was here. I think he would have to pick that goal because it was an extremely incredible goal.” he said.
It is, without a doubt, one of the most iconic goals in World Cup history. The image of van Persie flying through the air to somehow get the ball past Iker Casillas with a wonderfully impromptu header will live long in the memory.

Shaw will hope that Harry Kane et al. it may produce something similar for England in the coming weeks as the Three Lions look to make their mark in Qatar.
England and Shaw got off to a perfect start to their World Cup campaign in their opening Group B game, defeating Iran 6-2, with Shaw playing well.
England will secure their place in the knockout stages if they beat the USA tonight.
