Manchester United set to formally open contract talks with Diogo Dalot – Man United News And Transfer News

Manchester United have had a mixed bag of results this season under new manager Erik ten Hag. The Red Devils currently sit fifth in the table with five wins and three losses.

The start was as inauspicious as it could get, as United succumbed to back-to-back defeats at the hands of Brighton and Brentford.

They came back with a bang and went on a four-match winning streak, including beating arch-rivals Liverpool and league leaders Arsenal.

But they fell short against Manchester City who put the sword in them by scoring six. United have since regained some of the lost momentum by claiming a 2-1 victory over Everton in their last game.

The Dutch manager seems to have discovered the players he can trust and one player who has really impressed and has yet to miss a single game so far is Diogo Dalot.

The right-back is not going through his best moment since his arrival in England. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer did not seem to rate him and barely played with him, even sending him on loan to AC Milan.

It was Ralf Rangnick who gave him an extended run last season before Ten Hag came along and completely changed the way he played.

Dalot has always been someone who is adept at bombing forward, but it was his crossing and defensive work that let him down most of the time.

But this season, Dalot has been a revelation and is one of the first names in the squad. His defensive work has improved by leaps and bounds and he has even provided two assists after not registering one last season.

The former Porto youngster’s impressive form has seen Aaron Wan-Bissaka completely sidelined and the Portuguese has attracted plenty of interest from across Europe.

contract talks

Dalot’s contract with the Red Devils is due to expire next season and Barcelona and AC Milan are among the four clubs closely monitoring the situation. United have the option to activate a one-year extension.

According to journalist Jacque Talbot, “United is now formally looking for Diogo Dalot to sign the contract extension.”

However, the 23-year-old is in no hurry to sign to sign on the dotted lines even though he is “inclined to accept”. That’s because he wants to wait until the World Cup is over in a bid to “maximize value.”

A strong World Cup campaign for Portugal is sure to generate even more interest in his services and he may garner a higher salary increase.

For now, fans will be happy to see the kind of improvement he has had under Ten Hag and will want him to stay for the long haul as the Dutchman aims to take the club to the top.
