Manchester United will have to activate Enzo Fernández’s release clause if they want to sign the player’s services in January.
In recent days, Fernández has become a legitimate target in Erik ten Hag’s efforts to bolster his team’s midfield.
Alongside United, there are also other elite clubs in Europe interested in adding the Benfica midfielder to their ranks.
Liverpool and Real Madrid are two of United’s rivals said to be intent on signing the 21-year-old.
However, it won’t be cheap to force Benfica’s hand and a move will only be possible if the midfielder’s €120m release clause is activated.
Record via SportWitness reports: “This time around, Liverpool are included in a ‘sharks’ list that also includes the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester City and Manchester United.
“It is the ‘weight of the interest list’ that convinces Benfica to put such a high price on him.
“That’s why the Eagles only let him move in January in case someone from those clubs activates his €120m release clause.”
What is notable is that Fernández only joined Benfica from River Plate in the summer, but the Portuguese giants are already preparing for his departure.
Such has been his impact, that he was recently capped by a superb World Cup goal against Mexico to help Albiceleste on their way to the last 16 of the tournament.
According to SportWitness, most of the clubs that had the opportunity to sign Fernández from River Plate for a reduced price will undoubtedly regret not doing so.
United must ensure they stay in the midfielder race.
