Manchester United are not expected to make any moves in the January transfer window when it comes to player signings and arrivals.
According to The Manchester Evening News, United are currently not looking to make any more additions in the turn of the year and have their eyes on the summer window.
Samuel Luckhurst reports, “Sources have indicated their [Manchester United’s] the preference is to wait until the summer to begin the second phase of its reconstruction.”
“Most of United’s team activity in the winter is likely to revolve around contract extensions and potential renewals, with decisions to be made on the deals of David de Gea, Diogo Dalot, Luke Shaw, Fred and Marcus Rashford. ”.
“A goalscorer has already been identified as United’s priority position next year and a right-back is likely to be targeted, as manager Erik ten Hag was keen to strengthen that area in the summer.”
This is something that director of football John Murtough himself strongly hinted at last month.
Murtough commented that both the hierarchy and the manager were in agreement about the team’s future plans and that the club was operating mainly on the assumption of making moves during the summer.
However, there is a possibility of departures from Old Trafford in January. According to Luckhurst, the Red Devils are ready to arrange a series of loan spells for some of the club’s youngsters who need first-team minutes elsewhere.
Beyond United’s academy prodigies, Aaron Wan-Bissaka could also find his way on a mid-season transfer. The defender was told that he is not in Ten Hag’s plans and therefore he is free to move.
If the 24-year-old were to leave, United have the option of calling up Ethan Laird from Queens Park Rangers, where he is currently enjoying an impressive season-long loan.
One player who probably won’t leave despite his desire to leave is Cristiano Ronaldo.
The 37-year-old lacks buyers willing to bet on him. With the Champions League group stage wrapping up tonight, Ronaldo’s chances are likely to diminish further.
This result, unfortunately for both the player and the United fans, means that Ronaldo will stay until the end of the season and see the length of his contract.
