The European Super League has reared its ugly head again!
In April 2021, Manchester United along with 11 other founding members attempted to break away and form a parallel league in which they would enjoy permanent status.
The move which drew criticism and fury from both the media and supporters was seen by many as a purely profit scheme after the disastrous lockdown period that saw clubs lose millions in profit.
The English clubs eventually pulled out, but there are still rumors of a possible return, this time in a different format.
Football Inside reports that United held Super League talks in October.
The outlet broadcasts: “Man United held talks with the Super League organizers in October, sources told Football Insider.
“The specific nature of the discussion is unknown, but the Glazers announced they were seeking outside investment in the club only a few weeks later.”
“The Super League itself was dealt a potentially fatal blow earlier this month when the European Court of Justice preliminarily ruled that UEFA and FIFA have the right to sanction clubs that join rogue competitions.”
Following the decision by the Court of Justice of the European Union, A22 Sports Management, the company tasked with relaunching the controversial competition, is said to be hoping for a more favorable and amicable verdict when the full decision is made in early 2023. .
A22 Sports Management also confirmed that they had met with a group of football stakeholders, which now appears to have included United representatives.
The Glazers’ intent to sell is indicative of the fact that they have no hope of the Super League seeing the light of day. Furthermore, so that his deadline to sell the club aligns with the announcement of the full verdict to be made in 2023.
The upcoming introduction of an independent football regulator into English football also makes their task of joining the Super League that much more difficult.
