Manchester United Have Been Given Green-Light for a Move to Sign Cody Gakpo

Manchester United have received a green signal to sign Dutch national team and PSV Eindhoven attacker Cody Gakpo, according to a 90min report.

Manchester United are reportedly looking to sign an attacker in the January transfer window after Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure from the club in November this year. Cristiano Ronaldo, who rejoined Manchester United in the summer of 2021, parted ways with the Red Devils, who terminated his contract by mutual consent.

That came after Cristiano Ronaldo’s explosive interview with Piers Morgan in which he criticized Manchester United and manager Erik ten Hag, among many others.

Cody Gakpo is one of the names that Manchester United is considering to strengthen its attacking department in January. The Dutch international had attracted transfer interest from Manchester United in the summer of 2021. He was a transfer target for the Old Trafford outfit if his move to sign Antony failed. Man Utd signed Antony in the summer and he ultimately made no move for Gakpo.

Cody Gakpo has been impressive for PSV Eindhoven and the Netherlands in the 22/23 season. The 23-year-old has amassed 13 goals and registered 17 assists for PSV in 24 appearances in all competitions so far in the 22/23 season.

He was also a key player for the Netherlands in the 2022 FIFA World Cup. He featured in all five matches the Netherlands played at Qatar 2022. Cody Gakpo also scored three goals, one in each of the Netherlands’ three Group A matches.

Gakpo currently has more than three years left on his current contract with PSV. The last time he renewed his contract with the Dutch club was in January 2022. His current contract with PSV runs until 2026.

Man Utd will likely have to spend more than they would have needed in the summer of 2022 to land Cody Gakpo in the upcoming January transfer window. His price has risen since last summer.

PSV Eindhoven is expected to part ways with the Netherlands as long as the clubs interested in the player meet the asking price.

Meanwhile, Manchester United currently sit fifth in the Premier League points table. The Red Devils have 26 points in 14 games in the English top flight in the 22/23 season.
