Manchester United close to agreeing new three-year deal with under-pressure David de Gea – Man United News And Transfer News

The current season has shown Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag the areas where he needs to strengthen in the summer transfer window.

The most obvious is up front, where United have been hit by Cristiano Ronaldo’s acrimonious mid-season departure and Anthony Martial’s lingering injury problems.

But doubts remain about the long-term future of goalkeeper David de Gea, especially after the howling he has committed in games against Brentford and Everton.

DDG hasn’t always covered itself in glory this season

High-profile blunders aside, the Spaniard’s limited ability with the ball at his feet and his reluctance to step off the line and dominate his box make him unsuitable for Ten Hag’s plans.

United have been linked with a host of goalkeepers in the summer and winter transfer windows and the club has so far secured two loan goalkeepers: Newcastle United’s Martin Dubravka and Crystal Palace’s current reserve goalkeeper Jack Butland.

The Spanish international’s contract ends this summer and the club has the option to activate a one-year extension if necessary.

But with the 30-year-old currently earning a mammoth salary of £375,000 a week – the highest of any player – the club are reluctant to offer him such an extension.

However, the Dutchman does not want to upset the apple cart too much and is aware of De Gea’s popularity in the locker room and is therefore inclined to offer him a new contract.

New three-year contract on reduced terms close to being agreed

According to Football Insider, the Red Devils are ready to offer him a new three-year contract, but on greatly reduced terms.

“Man United are in advanced talks about a new contract with David de Gea, sources told Football Insider.

“The Premier League giants are confident the 32-year-old Spanish goalkeeper will commit to a new deal on reduced terms after signaling his willingness to take a cut from his current salary of £375,000 a week.

“United have offered De Gea a three-year contract worth £200,000 a week after Erik ten Hag was convinced by his performances this season,” the report added.
