Manchester United among meanest defences in Europe – Man United News And Transfer News

Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United have one of the worst defenses in European football this season.

The Red Devils are second in the number of clean sheets in all competitions, tied with FC Barcelona on fifteen.

Only Newcastle United, with sixteen clean sheets, rank higher among European clubs in the top five divisions.

This shows just how effective Ten Hag and his assistant Mitchell van der Gaag have been in turning the club’s fortunes around.

Defensive weaknesses and lapses in concentration plagued the team last season, with an alarming 57 goals conceded during the Premier League campaign alone.

Ten Hag has set out to put together a cohesive pressing team, with United now much more adept at winning the ball upfield.

A well-known defensive specialist, Van der Gaag has also been key in the set-up, and his impact as a trusted lieutenant is evident.

The summer signing of Lisandro Martinez has also gone a long way to improving United’s defensive line, and the Argentinian earned praise for his excellent defensive instincts, despite being dismissed by some rather dumb people, like Jamie Redknapp, after early season.

Another incorporation has also been key: Casemiro. The Brazilian’s dominant displays in midfield have been an integral part of defending the defense, despite the fact that he is usually joined in midfield by much more attacking players.

Still, it is a change worthy of immense admiration.

Manchester United have come a long way in a very short time, with the team now defending as a unit and hosting the quality to stop the opposition attacks.

Pending the results, two of Europe’s best defenses could be set for a brief encounter in the Carabao Cup final.

The last time Manchester United faced Newcastle, the game ended, unsurprisingly, goalless. Penalty shooting practice is recommended.
