Manchester United 2-0 Burnley:  5 talking points from the game

Manchester United returned to action after the international break with a 2-0 win against Burnley at Old Trafford in the EFL Cup round of 16 tie on Thursday. Christian Eriksen and Marcus Rashford hit the target for the Red Devils who secured their place in the quarterfinals of the competition. On that note, let’s look at the game’s five talking points.

#1 Marcus Rashford impressed on his comeback

Marcus Rashford enjoyed an excellent 2022 FIFA World Cup with England. He played five games in Qatar, scoring three goals. The Englishman has continued his brilliant form with Manchester United on his return, scoring a great goal against Burnley.

Rashford has scored four goals in 14 Premier League games this season. He will be looking to continue his FIFA World Cup form in the coming games.

#2 Casemiro is capable of playing defense

Erik ten Hag’s options at the back were limited as Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martínez have yet to return from the international break. Harry Maguire also missed the match through illness.

Defensive midfielder Casemiro started the game alongside Victor Lindelöf at the heart of the Red Devils’ defence. He did a decent job against Burnley, registering one tackle, one interception and six clearances during the game. The Brazil international has shown that he can fill the defense if necessary.

#3 Anthony Martial kept quiet

The French international will wait for more minutes to lead Manchester United’s forward in the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo. However, he struggled against Burnley, registering just two shots during the game. Manchester United will expect more from Anthony Martial in the upcoming matches.

#4 Is Aaron Wan-Bissaka Likely to Sell?

Aaron Wan-Bissaka has struggled with playing time at Manchester United since the arrival of Erik ten Hag. The former Ajax coach prefers Diogo Dalot in his starting eleven.

With the Portugal international not involved, Wan-Bissaka had a rare opportunity to impress. He enjoyed a decent game, setting up Christian Eriksen in the first set. However, the England international is expected to leave Old Trafford during the January window. A good match is unlikely to change his luck at the club.

#5 Martin Dubravka fight

Manchester United signed Martin Dubravka on loan from Newcastle United as David de Gea’s backup during the summer window. The Slovakia international made just his second appearance of the season against Burnley.

However, Dubravka had a torrid game, almost conceding an embarrassing own goal. His handling and positioning were also questionable during the game. From what we’ve seen against Burnley, David de Gea’s starting position is not under threat.
