Manager happy to let deserving Manchester United target leave in January

PSV boss and former Manchester United star Ruud van Nistelrooy has said he will not stand in Cody Gakpo’s way if his former club comes knocking on the striker in January.

Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag has already suggested that the Manchester club will try to sign a striker during the winter window, following Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure during the World Cup.

United have been linked to Gakpo for some time and their Dutch manager could have a big influence on any deal that is made.

The 23-year-old is having an impressive season in the Netherlands, making 24 appearances for PSV and contributing 13 goals and 17 assists.

That has been followed by an impressive World Cup campaign and has resulted in Van Nistelrooy asserting that Gakpo deserves whatever comes his way and will not block any move away from PSV.

Speaking about the Voetbal International striker, Van Nistelrooy said via talkSPORT: “It’s wonderful how he’s shown [at the World Cup].

“I enjoyed watching him and he deserves it for how he has behaved, how he has kept working and kept performing.

“I was able to help him from very close and that makes me proud. And then I’ll give you your way when you arrive.

The former Man United star went on to talk about a PSV exit: “If I have a choice, I prefer the summer, but it can also be now.

“You just know there comes a time when you can’t say no.”
