Mahrez stars as City manage incredible Spurs comeback

Manchester City rallied from a two-goal deficit to defeat Spurs on Thursday. The locals completed the comeback thanks to four goals in the second half, two from Riyad Mahrez. Tottenham entered the half-time break with a lead, but ultimately went down 4-2 on the night.

Although City dominated the early stages, they were unable to pose much of a threat to Spurs’ goal. However, Erling Haaland had two great chances to find the back of the net in the last five minutes of the first half. The superstar striker first saw a shot well saved by Huge Lloris, then missed an open net with a header moments later.

Spurs strike twice on the brink of halftime

Dejan Kulusevski opened the scoring for Spurs just minutes after Haaland’s miss. City shot themselves in the foot after a terrible pass from goalkeeper Ederson to Rodri. The Spanish midfielder could only get a piece of the ball, which finally fell at the feet of Kulusevski. The Swede passed the ball past Ederson and into the net.

The Spurs were still not done scoring in the first half. Emerson Royal doubled the visitors’ lead just two minutes later. The defender headed a rebound off a shot from Harry Kane straight to Ederson. Kane’s work to keep the ball in play with a fantastic sliding tackle on Rodri essentially set up the goal.

City return against Spurs to close the gap in the table

City, however, went flying in the second half. The locals responded with a goal six minutes after the break. Chaos ensued inside the Spurs box after Ilkay Gundogan and Jack Grealish both attempted close-range shots. Julián Álvarez pounced on the loose ball and conceded it.

almost exactly two minutes later. The Norwegian latched on to Mahrez’s cross just in front of Lloris. Haaland would not be lost this time. The Premier League’s top scorer now has a staggering 22 goals in the top flight in just 18 games.

Mahrez completed the incredible comeback with a goal in the 64th minute. It was City’s third goal in 12 minutes during the second half. The Algerian skipped the Spurs defense and fired a perfectly placed shot past Lloris at the near post. The typically quiet Etihad Stadium erupted when the ball went into the back of the net.

The City winger capped off the incredible night with another goal in the 90th minute of the game. Mahrez took Clement Lenglet’s pocket and ran free towards the goal. The African then sent the ball past a rushing Lloris to ensure the hosts won the game.

City’s win brings the reigning champions just five points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal. The two clubs still have to meet twice in the league before the campaign is complete.
