Liverpool youngster scores twice on first-ever start for England U19s – Liverpool FC

Liverpool academy striker Oakley Cannonier maintained a relentless streak of goals in his first start for the England under-19 team, firing twice in a 6-0 victory.

It has been a prolific start to the campaign for Cannonier, who has taken on a regular role with Liverpool under-21s while leading the European under-19 line.

The 18-year-old has scored four times for academy teams so far, having started three games and coming off the bench a further five times.

A growing reputation at club level earned Cannonier a call-up to Simon Rusk’s England Under-19 team along with Liverpool team-mates Luke Chambers, Isaac Mabaya and Lee Jonas.

And on Saturday, the striker made his first start in a lopsided victory over Georgia that secured advancement to the next round of qualifying for the UEFA European Under-19 Championship.

England were already 3-0 up and sailing before Cannonier’s first, with Leeds striker Sonny Perkins scoring a first-half hat-trick as the Young Lions dominated.

It took just six minutes after the restart for the Liverpool youngster to make his mark, with Man United midfielder Omari Forson’s shot deflected into his path for an instinctive finish.

Forson then made it 5-0 before a second to Cannonier, who finished off a Mabaya shot: the right-back came off the bench along with Chambers and Jonas.

The win followed a 2-0 win over Montenegro on Wednesday, in which Chambers scored the first and assisted the second, and seals progress to the next qualifying round ahead of their third Group 9 clash with Denmark.

Elsewhere on Saturday, James Balagizi got off to a start as England’s Under-20s beat Morocco 2-1, with the teenager playing 71 minutes while Harvey Davies did not play at all.
