Despite the surprising departure of club doctor Jim Moxon from Liverpool in early August, the club are yet to replace him as two internal candidates replace him.
The timing of Moxon’s departure could not have been worse for Jurgen Klopp’s preparations, as the former academy doctor left on August 1, days before the season began.
Moxon had been involved in pre-season but opted to leave the club after just two years in charge, communicating his desire to pursue new challenges.
Having seen club doctor Andy Massey, who has served for a long time at the club to take up a FIFA post in 2020, was another huge blow to a medical department that has seen high turnover in recent years.
Liverpool are now tasked with filling a key role in their staff as they continue a ridiculously busy campaign, with injuries already plaguing Klopp’s side.
Currently, GP and sports doctor Sarah Lindsay, who is married to Massey, travels with the first team on match days, supported off the pitch by the academy’s chief physician, Bevin McCartan.
McCartan has only been with Liverpool since early 2022, having joined the youth set-up after spells with the Harlequins Women’s rugby team, the NFL and England Women.
Lindsay, meanwhile, saw her duties expand following her husband’s departure, and during the COVID-19 pandemic Klopp praised her “incredible job”.
He is often involved in conducting medicals for incoming players and has developed a strong relationship with the coaching staff throughout his tenure on Merseyside.
It remains to be seen whether Liverpool will seek to promote from within again to play the role of club doctor, or pursue an internal goal.
Prior to Moxon’s appointment in 2020, the club came close to announcing the arrival of Gary O’Driscoll from Arsenal, only for the 52-year-old to reverse his decision and stay with the Gunners.
