Liverpool targets Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong

English Premier League giants Liverpool are interested in signing Dutch international Frenkie de Jong from Spanish club Barcelona.

After spending time in the ASV Arkel and RKC academy, Frenkie de Jong joined the Willem II youth setup.

He soon graduated from the Willem II academy and later signed for Dutch giants Ajax. After playing in the Ajax subsidiary, the midfielder gradually became a regular in the main squad.

De Jong then helped Ajax win the Eredivisie and was awarded the Eredivisie Player of the Season award for the 2018/19 season. In the same season, the midfielder also played a significant role in Ajax’s first Champions League appearances in 22 years. He appeared in the 2019 FIFA FFIFPro World 11 and was later signed by Catalan giants FC Barcelona.

The Barcelona midfielder could leave in winter

A Barcelona fan since childhood, Frenkie de Jong’s dream came true when the midfielder was able to sign for the Catalan Giants. He soon became a very important piece of the Barcelona team and established himself as a starter in the squad.

However, de Jong has so far failed to reach the heights of his performance in the 2018/19 season. Suddenly things took a drastic turn when Barcelona decided to sell him last summer due to his large salary.

Manchester United, former coach of De Jong, Erik ten Hag, was the team that came closest to signing the midfielder. The Reds Devils even reached a main agreement with the Barcelona board but Frenkie never wanted to leave the club.

With the summer window drawing to a close, de Jong stayed at the club but has seen far fewer minutes so far than the last two seasons. Surely De Jong is not very impressed with this situation and, according to reports, he can agree to leave if a good offer comes along.

Now, according to Diario AS, the giants of the English Premier League, Liverpool have generated a lot of interest in Frenkie de Jong. The English club is currently going through a crisis in midfield. This is one of the main reasons for his slow start to the season.

It has been understood that they are already looking for a midfielder who can give them some stability in the middle of the park. From there began the interest in Frenkie de Jong.

Reports further suggest that the English side may be looking to sign De Jong as early as the upcoming January window. However, they will have to fight against arch-rivals Manchester United. But with Liverpool offering regular Champions League football, they will surely have an advantage in this transfer.
