Liverpool star called for national team duty after surprise return from injury

Liverpool’s Jordan Henderson has been called up to the England squad for their matches against Italy and Germany after returning from injury quicker than expected.

The Liverpool midfielder got through several sessions over the weekend with no problems and thus turned up at St George’s Park on Monday night, the Daily Mail reports.

The Reds captain was injured in their clash with Newcastle late last month and was expected to be out for a while longer, meaning he would miss out on this spell of international football.

According to the Daily Mail, Henderson was privately hoping to be fit in time for Gareth Southgate to include him in his plans for England’s final camp before the World Cup and kept in touch with the national team coach.

Had the 32-year-old missed out, it could have put his place in the World Cup squad at risk, as this is likely to be the Liverpool captain’s last chance to play in football’s biggest tournament.
