Liverpool must get Nunez to repeat Benfica trick to inspire 2021/22 goal form

It’s fair to say that despite Liverpool spending £64m on Darwin Nunez earlier this summer, the Uruguayan has not had the easiest of starts on Merseyside.

The 23-year-old scored twice and recorded an assist in his first two competitive outings, but since then he has been far from easy on the striker.

The Anfield team clearly see something in the former Almeria striker and it would be ridiculous to suggest after six games that Nunez is not good enough to succeed at Anfield.

Benfica psychologist Evandro Mota agrees and has weighed in on the striker’s situation, explaining what adjustments Núñez could make off the pitch to boost his career at Liverpool.

“When an athlete has the guts to admit they need help, it’s much easier to work with them,” Mota told Four Four Two (via Mirror). “That’s Darwin, a boy way ahead of his age who always kept an open mind and was willing to listen to the right people.

“When people face so much criticism, we suggest that they better isolate themselves from the environment that hurts them. Darwin is a boy who demands a lot for himself and he realized that social media would only bring him down.

“He had already overcome a lot in his life, and that episode has helped him become an even better professional. That is what makes him a real gem, not only in terms of technical quality, but also in terms of intelligence.”

Online keyboard warriors have had a great time over the last few weeks and are getting a lot of ‘clicks’ lately due to the fact that every move Nunez seems to make is heavily scrutinized.

TalkSPORT pundit Gabriel Abgonlahor is the latest to jump on the anti-Núñez bandwagon, going so far as to compare the Uruguayan to Romelu Lukaku and label him “the worst signing of the summer”.

It must be remembered that our No. 27 did not choose the hefty fee that was paid to Benfica for his services.

He was the Lisbon-based side’s main man and after scoring 34 goals in 41 appearances for them last season (in all competitions), including two in as many appearances against Jurgen Klopp’s side, his market value was always going up. to increase significantly in one attempt. to divert interest from other clubs.

At the moment, the Uruguayan international still has his social media accounts active and seems to be doing a good job of blocking keyboard warriors who send him criticism.

Some may argue that it should be easy for Nunez to ignore online abuse or for him to just ‘move on’, but when thousands upon thousands attack him, it’s likely to have some kind of effect on his confidence.

When we return to action against Brighton on October 1, how good would it be to see our new striker find the back of the net and silence the haters?

You have reached a whole new league in a whole new country where you are still learning the language.

It is imperative that he be given time before we can hope to see him perform at his unplayable best that we all know he is capable of.

His performance against Liverpool at Anfield in the Champions League last season was a testament to the quality he possesses – we can’t wait to see Nunez week in and week out once he’s settled.
