Liverpool man could be out for long time after exiting pitch clutching his hamstring

Regrouping after a devastating 5-2 defeat at Anfield in the Champions League at the hands of a major European rival is no easy feat for a team and a manager.

Certainly not when it looks like a team have injuries to deal with and return to English top flight football after The Echo’s Theo Squires tweeted Liverpool’s Joe Gomez walking off the pitch ‘grabbing the back of his hamstring crook’.

The Merseysiders are set to take on Crystal Palace in the league next weekend and many fans are no doubt hoping that the club’s latest European heartbreak won’t undo the work of the previous two matches.

Excuses can be made for the back line in terms of the lack of protection they have received this term as part of a team that defended from the front and possessed supreme determination and work-rate in midfield.

Still, we’d be hugely surprised if there aren’t questions raised about Joel Matip and Joe Gomez late in the season based on the quality of their outings this span.

The latter may still have a future at the club due to his relative youth, the systemic issues facing the team and the potential constraints on our budget for the summer.

There is still hope that our number 2 may have a future at Anfield, but it is becoming increasingly clear that midfield alone may not be the only department in need of a facelift at the next available opportunity.
