Liverpool lining up January move for Memphis Depay – Man United News And Transfer News

Liverpool are currently considering a move for former Manchester United striker Memphis Depay.

As reported in The Express, Jurgen Klopp is willing to let Roberto Firmino go the other way, to ensure he gets Depay in January.

Depay’s contract expires at the end of this season, so any deal in January would also suit Barcelona, who would rather collect a fee than lose him for free next summer.

Depay moved to Barcelona at the start of last season and performed at a decent level in what was an overall underperforming season for the Spanish giants.

The Dutchman was reportedly a target for United in the summer transfer window should Cristiano Ronaldo end up leaving the club. United could offer him a possible return to Old Trafford at the end of his contract.

Given that the Red Devils are not guaranteed Champions League football next season and have spent much more than their budget this summer, Depay’s return makes sense as the club would rather spend much less next year.

Depay struggled to make his mark in Manchester for the first time after making a promising start. However, he has since rebuilt his reputation after impressing at Lyon and performing well for the Dutch national team as well.

Signed for United by Louis van Gaal, Depay was bent on setting Old Trafford on fire but found himself shackled due to van Gaal’s tactical set-up.

Jose Mourinho also failed to get the best of the free-spirited winger, eventually moving Depay to Lyon for half the £30m United paid for him just two years earlier.

No doubt Depay now offers more experience both on and off the pitch and would be a decent option for either side, especially on a free transfer.

If Depay were to move to Anfield, he would become only the third player to play for both teams in the Premier League era, joining Paul Ince and Michael Owen.

Neither Owen nor Ince are held in particularly high regard by either group of fans and this may influence Depay’s ultimate fate.
