Liverpool have now decided to sell £100k-p/w defender this summer – report

It has become increasingly clear that a full-team review will be needed at Liverpool in the upcoming transfer windows with concerns no longer isolated within midfield.

The poor form of several generally reliable players in the squad could lead to the club making some tough decisions in the near future, one of which is the possible sale of Joel Matip.

Football Insider is now reporting that the Reds would be happy to accept an offer in the region of £15m for their Cameroonian centre-half this summer.

Even with the player’s £100,000-a-week contract (according to Capology) due to expire next summer, that figure feels a bit short of what many fans were hoping to get for a player of the caliber of a 31-year-old, particularly after enjoying a such a phenomenal campaign in 2021/22.

Still, with the back line clearly in need of fresh ideas, and we’re likely to hold on to Joe Gomez after handing the Englishman a new long-term deal, Matip’s possible departure would make the most sense.

It means potential further turmoil next term if we look to bed down another centre-half, though hopefully both Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk can avoid lengthy treatment room stays long enough to allow Jurgen Klopp and his coaching team to tackle midfield properly after solutions are explored in the summer.
