Liverpool have just repeated Luis Diaz trick with latest transfer

Going into the new year with two wins out of three (after being knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Manchester City) in the Liverpool belt should give plenty of cause for optimism.

The signing of Cody Gakpo on top of that should more than bolster the mood at Anfield, as key club officials are said to have signaled the momentum the signing has provided, much like the one that followed Luis’s move. Diaz in January of last year. .

“Important people at the club have already spoken privately about the boost that Gakpo has provided to everyone connected to Liverpool,” Paul Gorst wrote for the Echo. “The arrival of an international-class attacker midway through the campaign, as evidenced by Diaz’s sacking, will do that and there has been great excitement at both Anfield and the AXA Center this week.”

The Dutchman has already enjoyed a phenomenal first half of the campaign, racking up 30 goal contributions in 24 games for PSV.

Make no mistake: we can’t just stand there at the window given the obvious problems in the middle of the park.

It can reasonably be argued that Fabinho’s return to form heralds a serious change in fortunes for us in that department, although, with top four qualification far from guaranteed at the moment, perhaps too great a risk.

That’s not to minimize the potential positive impact Gakpo’s signing will have for the remainder of 2022/23, which we are confident about.

The fear is, of course, that failure to address a problem that has been apparent since the start of the season could spell Liverpool’s undoing ahead of a summer window in which Champions League football could mark a big difference when it comes to more signings.
