Who are the 10 best left-footed players in Liverpool history? From John Barnes to Mohamed Salah, we’ve got you covered!

There is something unique about seeing a player with a lethal left foot.

For whatever reason, seeing a player hit the ball into the net with his left peg hits differently.

Some of the most majestic and mesmerizing players in the game have been left-footers, and Liverpool have had their fair share.

But who are the 10 best left-handers in Reds history?

10. Patrick Berger

Attacking midfielder Berger made a huge impact after joining Liverpool in 1996, and his long-range left-footed shots were something else.

His debut goal was a sign of things to come. A half-time substitute in a goalless game against Leicester, Berger came off the bench. Ten minutes later, he opened his account with an excellent left foot against the Kop. One touch and hit.

“Patrick Berger could crack a shot with his left foot, he loved it.”

One of the sweetest lefties in Liverpool’s recent history, without a doubt. Aurelio was a talented left back whose career with the Reds was blighted by injuries.

A set-piece specialist, his most memorable goals came in a 4-1 thrashing of Manchester United in 2009, and in the Champions League against Chelsea.

8. Daniel Sturridge

Sturridge was a first-class goalscorer, but had he avoided injury he really could have become one of Liverpool’s and England’s all-time great strikers.

He could score all kinds of goals with his left foot and could generate impressive power on his shots with very little backward movement. His long-range effort against West Brom in October 2013 epitomized the graceful forward that he was.

“Sturridge could undoubtedly be one of the best strikers in Premier League history without all the injuries.”

For many Liverpool fans, when they think of left feet, they think of Riise.

A left-back who could also operate further forward, the power the Norwegian could generate from his shots was simply unique. Let’s put it this way, when Riise was lining up a free throw, you didn’t want to be on the wall.

“John Arne Riise, Thor’s left foot.”

Heighway was largely bipedal, but his left hand was still good enough to warrant a spot on this list.

He wasn’t naturally left-handed, but he didn’t need to differentiate between the two feet, whether crossing, dribbling or shooting. An all-time great, with an extremely gifted left foot.

5. Alan Kennedy

Kennedy played more than 350 times, mostly in the first half of the decade, playing an attack-minded left-back role.

His most celebrated moment came when he scored the decisive penalty in the 1984 European Cup final, but he also scored the winning goal in the ’81 final.

He has been known to comment that he only uses his right to stand!

“Alan Kennedy, he won us a European Cup with his head, but he’s still a lefty!”

A revelation on the left, initially signed by Arsenal as a striker, Kennedy made almost 400 appearances for the Reds, winning five titles, three European Cups and one UEFA Cup.

He scored 72 goals and recorded 55 assists with the help of his trusty left boot. A true great of the club.

One of Liverpool’s all-time great goalscorers, Toxteth-born Fowler is undoubtedly one of the most iconic goalscorers the club has seen.

He would go on to score 183 goals in 369 appearances over two spells for the Reds, with 105 of them coming with his left foot.

“Fowler was ridiculous. His numbers, his natural goalscoring ability. An outrageous player, a good scouser and loved to silence his critics.”

The Egyptian king. When Salah arrived from Roma in the summer of 2017, no one could have imagined that he would have the career at Liverpool that he has had to date.

A unique talent and an amazing goalscoring record. His lightning against Chelsea in 2019 told you everything you need to know about his talented left foot.

“The best for the goals he has scored and the trophies he has won.”

1. John Barnes

It just had to be ‘Digger’. Barnes was a majestic player, a completely unstoppable striker in his prime, with a terrifyingly good left foot.

He won two league titles with the Reds, as well as two FA Cups and one League Cup.

“He used to tear apart every team’s defense when he wanted to – absolute class.”

“Back then it was a more difficult game for attackers, but he made it look so easy.”
