Jamie Carragher has accused Liverpool of being a defensive “mess”, while criticizing the “absolutely inexcusable” reality of the great chances conceded this season.
The Merseysiders were again opened by a comparatively more physical and intense Brentford side to sacrifice their first three points of 2023.
“This is nothing new for Liverpool defensively. They’ve been a mess all season. It’s so easy to go through them,” the former centre-back told Sky Sports. “I think they have conceded more big chances than any other team in the Premier League this season, which is absolutely inexcusable.”
The Reds have already brought in an admirable signing in PSV star Cody Gakpo, although it’s fair to say that adding another attacker simply won’t cut it when it comes to tackling the club’s most problematic department – the midfield.
To that end, our former Red has once again urged the decision-makers at Anfield to spend money in midfield and bring in a Gini Wijnaldum-esque signing who can add genuine solidity and reliability to midfield.
“Liverpool need to sign three midfielders I would say. Not necessarily everything to play. But Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are out of contract, as is James Milner. The age of Thiago, who gets injured a lot, Jordan Henderson and Fabinho”, added Carragher.
“Liverpool need three midfielders and they are going to cost at least £40-50m each.
“As important as a Jude Bellingham is a Georginio Wijnaldum guy who can protect the back four and stop people from running into that defence.”

Bringing the Dutchman back from Newcastle for £25m was perhaps one of the most underrated deals we’ve ever done.
The Dutch international was nearly indestructible, making himself available for over 90% of our total games, allowing the midfield to thrive paying off his teammates’ tactical debts and adding dynamism to the department.
In Harvey Elliott and Fabio Carvalho, there’s every chance the future of midfield is in very good hands, but for now, it’s clear the money needs to be spent as soon as possible to ensure our decline is halted quickly.
