Lionel Messi then assisted his team’s second goal in the Argentina vs. Mexico match. Rodrigo de Paul took a short corner, passing the ball to Messi, who played for Enzo Fernandes. Fernández advanced into the Mexico box and then created space for a shot and sent the ball into the far corner.

In the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Messi did not score any goals, but did provide an assist. That happened in Argentina’s 3-1 victory over Mexico in the round of 16.
In the 2014 World Cup, Lionel Messi and Argentina made it all the way to the final, where Germany defeated them to lift the trophy. Messi recorded an assist for Argentina in that edition of FIFA’s flagship event.

In the 2018 World Cup in Russia, Messi gave Argentina two assists. Both assists came in their 4-3 loss to Germany in the round of 16.
When he assisted Enzo Fernandes in Argentina’s second goal in their victory over Mexico, Messi became the first man to register an assist in five different editions of the FIFA World Cup. Messi now has six assists to his name in five World Cups.
