Leo Santa Cruz Sides With Gervonta Davis In Possible Ryan Garcia Matchup

Both Gervonta Davis and Ryan Garcia continue to fulminate in the public eye. Garcia, in particular, has shouted to the mountaintops that while the Baltimore native possesses devastating power, he is more than capable of pinning the 27-year-old to the mat.

More recently, Garcia (23-0, 19 KOs) brushed aside an innocuous challenge from Javier Fortuna. The two would officially face off on July 16 at the Crypto.com Arena, in Los Angeles, California.

The multiple-time former champion was outclassed early on, hitting the canvas in the fourth, fifth and sixth rounds before referee Jerry Cantu called it off. While the loquacious Garcia is well aware that he has plenty of options, he has said time and time again that a matchup with Davis (27-0, 25 KOs) is still top of his list.

However, Leo Santa Cruz, having felt the power of Davis firsthand, is fully convinced that Garcia would become another Davis knockout victim.

“Ryan Garcia is a great fighter and everything, but I think Tank Davis has the power,” Santa Cruz said during an interview with FightHype.com. “If Gervonta catches him with one of those hooks, I think he can knock him out.”

The 27-year-old Davis violently pushed the Mexican star out of his way during their 2020 matchup. Desperate to keep his man at bay, Santa Cruz attempted to use perpetual pressure and a high-volume attack on Davis. Though he had moments from him, Davis eventually found his rhythm, stopping Santa Cruz in the sixth round.

Since then, Davis has punished his competition. During his final trip to the ring, Rolando Romero, after years of brazen trash talk, was forced to swallow his words as Davis scored the sixth-round knockout victory.

Lately, both Davis and Garcia have continued to talk back and forth. Although unconfirmed, Davis appeared to indicate on her social media account that she will return under the bright lights in “December.”

Ultimately, Oscar De La Hoya, Garcia’s current promoter, recently posted on Twitter that he’s patiently waiting for one of Davis’s representatives to give him a ring to get a deal done.

“I’m still waiting for the Gervonta promoter to call me.”
