Leeds United record-breaking deal could face government review

With the government threatening to crack down on sponsorship of gambling in football, Leeds United’s contract with SBOTOP as front-of-shirt sponsor will be reviewed.

Since being promoted, Leeds have switched betting sponsorships, with 32RED replaced by Philippine-based company SBOTOP on the front of the team’s jersey.

Leeds signed a £6m contract with SBOTOP to serve as their main kit sponsor in 2020; however, if the government passes legislation banning gambling sponsors, Leeds may decide to withdraw all sponsorships by 2024 or 2025.

Eight of the 20 Premier League clubs have betting companies as sponsors and all face a review by the government.
