Klopp discusses Anfield atmosphere as Liverpool fail to secure victory

Jurgen Klopp believes the atmosphere inside Anfield deteriorated when Liverpool took the lead against Brighton, but admitted he never felt comfortable with his team holding out for three points.

Brighton hushed everything inside L4 after they built a 2-0 lead on 17 minutes, but noise levels soon rose inside the pitch as a brace from Bobby Firmino and an own goal from Adam Webster completed a superb comeback for the Reds.

However, Klopp’s team could not secure victory as Leandro Trossard completed his hat-trick in the last 10 minutes and the German tactician spoke about his team’s performance after the game.

“It’s not the first time (when asked if he felt the atmosphere plummeted after Liverpool took the lead),” the former Borussia Dortmund manager said (as quoted by Liverpool World).

“It just didn’t happen too often because we were more convincing. It’s normal and I don’t blame anyone for that in the stands, not at all, this feeling was obvious, it wasn’t done.

“So the good part of the story is obviously 2-0 down and then 3-2 up, but that costs energy. The guys came back from all over the world and you could see that.

“Cost [Tsimikas] they played two games and stuff like that and the other guys didn’t play for a while, like Hendo [Jordan Henderson] and this kind of thing. That makes it more difficult.

“Right now we have to control the game much better. I think we talked about controlling the game for two or three years, that we have to control it better.

“This was definitely a moment where we should have controlled possession better, but we didn’t. So, it looks a bit like it did today, yeah, it wasn’t my favorite part of the game, that’s for sure.”

The visitors certainly deserve credit for their performance, especially during the first half, and if we’re completely honest with ourselves then a point was probably a fair result.

Recently, among Liverpool supporters, there has been a lot of talk about the atmosphere inside Anfield, as it certainly hasn’t been that loud this season.

On-field performances certainly don’t help the atmosphere, but they work both ways: when players need our support, we need to step up and make it as difficult as possible for opponents.

Too many of our players are not performing at the level they are capable of and it takes a lot of work on the training pitch to get us out of this mini rut.

We now have just two wins from our first seven Premier League games and for a team that wants to fight for the league title, that is very worrying.

We are already 11 points behind league leaders Arsenal, although they have played one more game, and if Manchester City beat Manchester United today, we will be 10 points behind Pep Guardiola’s team.

We need to focus on ourselves for now to make sure we are in the best possible position before the Qatar World Cup kicks off at the end of next month.
