Kevin de Bruyne reacts to winning MOTM award in win over Canada

Kevin de Bruyne: The Belgian admitted he did not deserve to win the Match of the Match award for his performance in Belgium’s 1-0 win over Canada in their 2022 World Cup opener.

Belgium kicked off their 2022 World Cup campaign by facing Canada in a Group F match. Michy Batshuayi scored the only goal of the game on the stroke of halftime as Belgium earned all three points of the match.

But Belgium was far from its prime against a Canadian team that made 22 shots against the European heavyweights. Belgium took nine shots, while both teams had three shots on target.

De Bruyne was also far from his prime, with the midfielder putting in a sub-par performance against Canada. De Bruyne has certainly put in better performances than the one he put in against Canada. However, he did receive the Man of the Match award for his performance against Canada.

Speaking after the match, De Bruyne said he did not deserve to win the Match of the Match award. The Manchester City midfielder confessed that he did not play a great game.

“I don’t think I played a great match,” De Bruyne said. “I don’t know why I have the trophy. Maybe it’s because of the name.

De Bruyne also admitted that Belgium’s performance against Canada was not good enough. He confessed that Belgium made it difficult for them against Canada.

De Bruyne also stressed that the performance of the Belgian players, including himself, must be better. “This was not good enough,” De Bruyne said.

“We made it difficult for ourselves and stress invaded the team. There was more space than you could see and we used the long ball too much,” he added. “It has to be better, including myself.”

Meanwhile, the win lifted Belgium to the top of the points table in Group F. Belgium has three points in one game and ranks first in the table. Canada, meanwhile, is fourth in the group.

Second in Group F is Croatia, which drew 0-0 with third-placed Morocco.

Meanwhile, Belgium faces Morocco in their next match at the 2022 World Cup. The match between the two sides kicks off at 6:30pm Indian Standard Time on November 27.
