Martin Keown has explained that he is a ‘huge fan’ of Joe Gomez and believes the numerous injuries the Englishman has suffered during his Liverpool career have resulted in Reds fans being ‘denied one of the best associations ‘ with former Charlton man and Virgil van Dijk.
The latter has been recognized as one of the best central defenders in the world since joining the Anfield side from Southampton, but former Arsenal player Keown believes our No. 2 is also an “outstanding talent” and will certainly should head to the World Cup with England next. month.
“A lot of people seem to be against Gomez, I’m a huge fan,” Keown told talkSPORT (via Rousing The Kop). “He had a terrible injury on the back of doing an ACL, he was badly injured when he first came to Liverpool. I think he is an outstanding talent.
“I think we may have been denied one of the best partnerships ever with him and Van Dijk in the middle. There’s a quality to the pace about him, there’s an arrogance about him, he passes the ball very well. I’m not sure we can turn our backs on a player like that.”

With Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate currently sidelined with injuries, Gomez has been impressive recently, helping Liverpool to clean sheets against Manchester City and West Ham.
The 25-year-old also showed his versatility in Rangers’ Champions League defeat, starting at right-back and recording a sublime assist for Bobby Firmino in a 7-1 thrashing at Ibrox.
Gomez is a quick and strong defender who came to the fore during our Premier League winning campaign when he starred alongside our No. 4 for most of the campaign.
He has been extremely unlucky with injuries, but hopefully he can stay fit for the rest of the season and help us collect even more trophies.
If he can continue his impressive performances, he will surely leave England boss Gareth Southgate with a tough decision as he weighs which defenses he will take to Qatar next month.
