Kenia Enriquez Eager For World Title Clash, Wants Marlen Esparza

Two-time world champion Kenya Enríquez (24-1, 10KO) is looking to have a big finish in 2022 and an even bigger one in 2023. After a two-and-a-half-year hiatus, Enríquez returned with a big win in late May. the multi-time world champion Gabriela Sánchez before the final bell, a feat that no previous champion had achieved.

“She was a tough competitor and our goal was to make a statement,” promotional free agent Enriquez said. “In 14 fights she had faced five world champions including Yesica Bopp and Ibeth Zamora and none had stopped her. She was tough, but I’m glad we got the job done.”

Currently, Enriquez of Tijuana, MX tops the flyweight rankings for not only the WBC but also the WBA and IBF.

“I’m ready for a world title shot,” the 28-year-old Enriquez said with a smile. “I got the WBO flyweight world title and the WBC interim light flyweight world title. I really wanted a shot at the full belt at light flyweight, but Yesenia Gomez never wanted to prove herself. I hope the flyweight champions really want to fight the best.”

Marlen Esparza of Golden Boy Promotions of Houston, TX holds the WBC and WBA world titles, while Argentina’s Leonela Paola Yudica holds the IBF world strap.

“I am willing to face any of the champions, including Alaniz from the WBO,” said Enriquez confidently. “If I can choose, I want Esparza, she has two of the belts, so she already did the work for me. We have some history and I think that’s why she’s going to avoid me, but I hope the WBC and WBA will force her to face me sometime in 2023, the No. 1 ranking.”

Enriquez will see action at the end of October.
