Kane off the mark as midfielder shines again

England are through to the quarter-finals of the World Cup after defeating Senegal 3-0 in the round of 16 of the tournament.

Following France’s 3-1 win against Poland earlier in the day, the Three Lions will now face Didier Deschamps’ Les Bleus for a chance to play in the semi-finals.

After what was an excellent performance from Gareth Southgate’s side, which included goals from Arsenal’s Jordan Henderson, Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka, we have rated each England who took part.

Jordan Pickford – 8/10

He didn’t have much to do in the second half of the game, but he did make a great save in the first half.

Kyle Walker – 6/10

He seemed shaky for the first 45 minutes, but he grew into the game well at the end. However, he will have to improve if he is to stop Frenchman Kylian Mbappe next week.

John Stones – 6/10

Solid in general and with the bad luck of not having scored from a corner in the first half.

He replaced Eric Dier with around 10 minutes to go.

Harry Maguire – 6/10

Like his fellow central defender the Stones, Man United’s Harry Maguire put in another decent performance. The Englishman will need to remain focused and in top form to keep the French out when the two nations meet in the quarter-finals.

Lucas Shaw – 7/10

Very solid performance. There are no obvious bugs to report. Proving to be a great player for the Three Lions.

Declan Rice – 6/10

He controlled the midfield well and allowed Jude Bellingham to be at his creative prime.

Jordan Henderson – 7/10

He took a hit in the second half, which will be a concern, but the Liverpool captain did his nation proud after opening the scoring in the first half of the game.

Kalvin Phillips replaced him with five minutes to go.

Jude Bellingham – 9/10

Excellent all night.

The Borussia Dortmund midfielder is quickly becoming his manager’s most important player, despite being just 19 years old. Although Bellingham recorded an assist for Henderson’s goal, his best moment came during the build-up to Harry Kane’s goal.

Replaced by Mason Mount with 10 minutes to go.

Bukayo Saka – 7/10

It proved to be a problem for the Senegal defense before unlocking them and scoring a well deserved goal.

Substituted in the second half by Marcus Rashford.

Phil Foden – 7/10

He was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet himself, but the Man City academy graduate registered two assists. It’s going to be tough for the likes of Raheem Sterling and Jack Grealish to pry the 22-year-old out of Southgate’s starting line-up.

Replaced by Grealish.

Harry Kane – 7/10

England’s talisman is finally out of place!

Kane capped off an excellent play by England in the second half of the game with his holdup play also creditable.

Substitutes:

Jack Grealish – 6/10

He entered and forced Senegal to focus his attention on him. He didn’t really make an impact, but it was tough when he was only given 15 minutes when the game was already won.

Marco Rashford – 6/10

He came awfully close to helping Kane. Man United’s Rashford did not hurt his case to start against France.
