Juventus captain Leaonardo Bonucci close to extend his stay

Serie A giants Juventus are very close to extending their club captain Leonardo Bonucci’s contract.

Leonardo Bonucci began his football career at the Viterbese academy. He then graduated from the Viterbese academy and joined Serie A giants Inter Milan.

Bonucci failed to cement his place in the Nerazzurri squad. He then played for Treviso, Pisa, Genoa and Bari before joining another Serie A giant, Juventus, in 2010. Bonucci gradually worked his way into the starting eleven. The defender then won six straight Serie A titles with the Bianconeri.

He left the club in 2017 and joined AC Milan. However, just after a year, Bonucci returned to Juventus again and won two more Serie A titles with the club. Bonucci was also a key player in the Italian team that won the European Championship last season.

Juventus captain Leonardo Bonucci close to signing extension deal

According to a report from Romeo Agresti, Italian international Leonardo Bonucci is set to sign a new contract with Serie A giants Juventus, which will keep him in Turin beyond 2024.

Previously there were reports suggesting that Bonucci could leave the club as soon as the next winter transfer window. The 35-year-old defender is past his prime and hasn’t played his prime this season.

As a result, he was kept out of the starting lineup in Juventus’ final game against local rivals Torino. However, Bonucci played in the second half as Juventus came out with all three points.

After this match, there were rumors that the Juventus captain’s relationship with manager Massimiliano Allegri is at an all-time low. That is why he does not want to continue in the club.

But now it seems that things have changed drastically and the defender will stay at Juventus. Meanwhile, the Bianconeri are currently struggling in both the league and European competition.

They have won just four of their first ten Serie-A games and currently have sixteen points. Once a contender for Serie-A, Allegri’s side are currently in eighth place in the table. Then in the Champions League, Juventus lost 3 of their first 4 matches. This includes a humiliating defeat against Israeli club Maccabi Haifa.

They are about to be eliminated from the UEFA Champions League group stage and, at this point, finishing in the top four in Serie A can be considered an achievement. So now more than ever, Juventus need their senior players like Bonucci to carry them over the finish line.

Therefore, this news of Bonucci’s contract renewal is very refreshing for the Bianconeri camp.
