Judge rejects plea deal for Gervonta Davis, trial set for Dec. 12

More bad news has emerged for Gervonta Davis. Even though he appeared to have reached a plea deal with Baltimore prosecutors that would have freed him from any actual jail time stemming from a 2020 hit-and-run incident, a judge rejected the plea deal and instead ordered that Davis’ case go to trial. A two-day trial is scheduled to begin on December 12.

The plea deal that the judge ultimately rejected called for Davis to receive a one-year suspended sentence as well as two months of home confinement along with permission to work.

However, a victim in the case told the judge of the serious injuries she received as a result of this incident and expressed her feelings that the plea agreement was too lenient. According to that victim, she looked Davis square in the eye and asked for his help before he decided to flee the scene.

“I begged Mr. Gervonta Davis; I looked him in the eye,” said Jyair Smith. “I said I have to get home to my daughter, I am pregnant. She never once did she come to help me. She gathered up her things and left” the scene, he said.

The judge agreed that the plea agreement was not a sufficient administration of justice and therefore this case goes to trial.

Davis reportedly reached civil settlements with three other victims of this crash, but still has a civil lawsuit pending with Smith.
