Josko Gvardiol set to stay at Leipzig beyond 2023

Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea look set to miss out on Croatian defender Josko Gvardiol after they reportedly submitted offers for a winter transfer.

According to Sky Germany, Gvardiol is expected to stay at RB Leipzig beyond the summer of 2023. He signed a new contract with the Bundesliga side last summer following interest from Chelsea, in which he is linked to the club until 2027.

The Blues have maintained their interest in the defender and now the two Manchester teams have joined in a bid to secure the young talent, who is expected to become one of the best centre-backs in the world.

The 20-year-old is currently impressing on football’s biggest stage as Croatia is through to the World Cup semi-finals. He has started every game and has been exceptional defensively with his team.

English clubs in the race for Gvardiol

According to Foot Mercato, City have submitted an offer of £86 million. Chelsea have offered £82m and United have also joined their Premier League rivals in submitting a £77m offer.

The Red Devils are likely to oversee the departure of club captain Harry Maguire, which means they will be in the market for a new central defender.

Thiago Silva, 38, may not seem to age on the pitch, but he’s surely thinking of retiring soon, especially after Brazil’s World Cup knockout and English top-flight pace. Consequently, Chelsea will be looking for a long-term replacement.
