Josep Gvardiol was Ralf Rangnick’s top recommendation to Manchester United – Man United News And Transfer News

Ahead of Croatia’s World Cup round of 16 match against Japan in Qatar, reports surfaced that Josko Gvardiol was recommended to Manchester United as a possible prime transfer target by caretaker manager Ralf Rangnick.

As caretaker manager, the German oversaw a downright awful Red Devils team that lacked both enthusiasm and tactical acumen.

And, according to Talksport, Rangnick made Gvardiol his top recommendation as a player who would improve United’s runaway defence.

At 20, the Croatian is already considered one of the best central defenders in world football.

His passing from behind is a particularly strong part of his game and, coupled with his left foot, would certainly have helped United develop their game last season.

His recovery pace could also have helped United push their defensive line to play a more proactive pressing game, something that was difficult to do with Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof in the flank.

Of course, Erik ten Hag made his own recommendation for a top defensive target in the form of Argentine star Lisandro Martinez.

The former Ajax player has brought those qualities to Old Trafford and has started his England career with aplomb.

However, he is still the only left-footed center back in the squad and, sooner or later, Ten Hag will look for a player to support him in that regard.

Gvardiol is unlikely to be that player, with his profile of someone who would be an automatic starter at a top club.

The Croatian star would not be cheap either, in terms of fees or salary, and a host of other top clubs see him as an ideal addition to their back lines.

Premier League rivals Liverpool and Chelsea are among them, meaning United fans may well see ‘what they could have won’ before long, with a move possible in January.
