Jose Benavidez Sr. Rooting For GGG Against Canelo, Hoping GGG Gives David Benavidez A Title Shot

José Benavidez Sr. has officially landed in Las Vegas and plans to attend the third installment between Canelo Alvarez and Gennadiy Golovkin this coming weekend.

With 24 rounds to go and two highly controversial decisions, neither man is entirely satisfied with how things ultimately turned out. In what appears to be the final meeting between them, fans and members of the media have flooded into Sin City in an effort to watch these Hall of Fame fighters square off once again.

Benavidez Sr., on the other hand, admits he’ll be doing a lot more than taking in the sights from an amateur’s perspective. His son, David Benavidez, has begged and begged Alvarez to accept him. Yet despite public calls for him, Álvarez has continually looked in the other direction.

At this point, Benavidez Sr. has been faced with the possibility that a matchup between his son and Alvarez simply won’t take place in the foreseeable future. With that reality setting in, Benavidez Sr. took off his coach’s hat and donned his Golovkin attire. If the reigning unified middleweight champion usurps Alvarez and reigns supreme in the super middleweight division, Benavidez Sr. believes the star from Kazakhstan would be more than willing to give his son a chance.

“I am going to support GGG so that he can win,” Benavidez Sr. told Fight Hub TV. “Maybe he can give us a fight. GGG, he would fight anyone, he doesn’t give a fuck. I’m going to cheer him on so we can have that fight with GGG.”

Golovkin recently celebrated his 40th trip around the sun by staining his gloves with Ryota Murata’s blood. In doing so, Golovkin began his second reign as unified middleweight champion. Still, even with the former Olympic silver medalist grabbing a stranglehold on the division, oddsmakers believe Alvarez will put a violent end to their perpetual rivalry.

In addition to Golovkin fighting Alvarez and the father of time, for the first time in his storied career, Golovkin will relinquish his middleweight throne and compete as a full-fledged super middleweight. Considering the highly respected 160-pound champion has the chips stacked against him, no matter how much Benavidez Sr. wants him to pull off the upset, he’s having a hard time seeing it happen.

“It’s going to be tough. I think he (Alvarez) should win. Whoever comes better prepared that night and is more focused with no problems, I think he has a better chance of winning.”
