Joe Gomez explains “challenge” of playing left-back – and battles with Bukayo Saka – Liverpool FC

Joe Gomez insists Liverpool will not be giddy at the prospect of another possible quadruple tilt but has acknowledged there is a fire in the team to achieve this season.

The Premier League leaders continue to fight on four fronts after advancing to the fourth round of the FA Cup on Sunday with a 2-0 win at Arsenal.

Next on the agenda for Jurgen Klopp’s side is Wednesday’s Carabao Cup semi-final first leg at home to Fulham, but Gomez says there is no prospect of complacency setting in.

He said: “We don’t want to get dizzy. We are all full of desire and want to make the best of the season.

“All we can do is take it game by game. I know it’s a cliché, but there is desire and we have a platform to build on.

“We can’t take that for granted, as we know that last season wasn’t always easy and we went through difficult times, but we built from it and learned from it. So, we have to keep going like this and see where it takes us.”

Gomez only made 31 appearances in all competitions for Liverpool last season, but has already made 26 this season and has recently been used at left-back with Andy Robertson absent.

While the unorthodox position has been a challenge for the London-born defender, he enjoyed another battle with Bukayo Saka and praised a great team effort at the Emirates.

“He is a top player, a direct winger. That’s not often the case these days, but he’s someone who will stay open to pick up the ball and throw at you. It was difficult. I knew it was going to be because of having played against him so recently, but yes, great performance by the team, we all worked hard,” added Gómez.

“It’s different on the left side! It has been a challenge to adapt. Small differences that may not be noticeable, maybe how you receive the ball, etc.

“But the people at the club now know me and they know that I will give my all. “I’ve been here for a long time now, but I’m grateful to play for the club.”

Liverpool were on the ropes for a long period in the capital before a Trent Alexander-Arnold free-kick led to Jakub Kiwior’s own goal and a late Luis Diaz goal made it four wins out of five for Klopp’s men .

The victory was even more impressive considering the club’s long list of casualties, with captain Virgil van Dijk ill, while Mohamed Salah is absent at the African Cup of Nations.

However, Gomez praised the team’s unity and backed them to take another step towards silverware in this week’s cup tie against Fulham at Anfield.

“There is definitely a good bond in the team. There is definitely freshness and fire in the team,” he added.

“We’re not looking too hard at who we lost and who we don’t have. We have top-level players who we have missed this year.

“Thiago, Robbo, Kostas, Mo are leaving, but the coach continues to reiterate that we can all do a job defensively and we can all defend.

“It means we don’t have to worry about who’s missing. We have to maintain that mentality.

“We have a little more quickness in our step. Another great game on Wednesday. We want to reach another final, [it’s] on two legs, but we will do it.”
