Leeds United manager Jesse Marsch hangs by a thread at work.
After winning two of their first three Premier League games this season, Marsch’s men are now winless in seven successive league games. Leeds are currently just above the relegation zone in 16th place. The club has nine points from 10 games.
The latest defeat came on Thursday at the hands of fellow relegation contenders Leicester City. Leeds lost 2-0 on the night and fell level on points with Wolverhampton Wonderers in 18th place. It was only Leicester’s second win of the current campaign.
Marsch did himself no favors with the Leeds fans when he went straight down the tunnel after the match. Players and coaches normally greet visiting fans, regardless of the score, before leaving the field of play.
The coach apologized during his post-match interview. “I want to apologize to them,” Marsch said. “It was nothing against the fans. At that point I’m disappointed and trying to figure out what I’m going to say to the team. My focus is on stopping the bleeding.”
Jesse Marsch last chances with Leeds job
While fans have apparently turned on their manager, The Yorkshire Evening Post reports that the club still believes in the American manager. The local newspaper states that the team’s management is behind the coach and believes that he can still achieve positive results.
However, the board members can be influenced by the fans within Elland Road. If the atmosphere reaches a boiling point, the club’s management may be forced to make a change of direction.
Marsch’s next match will be a crucial test. Leeds face Fulham at home on Sunday. Fulham sit in the top half of the table, but the West Yorkshire side think they should win the game. The Cottagers have just returned to the Premier League after relegation following the 2020/21 season.
Jesse Marsch could well be out of the Leeds job if his side fail against Fulham at the weekend. The American has only been with Leeds since February as he replaced the popular Marcelo Bielsa as head coach.
