Jamie Carragher weighs in on Liverpool’s Premier League title hopes

Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool can still contend for the Premier League title this season despite a far from convincing start to the campaign for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The Reds have won just two of their opening six league games this season and currently sit eight points behind last season’s champions Manchester City (who have now played a game more than Liverpool).

The Anfield side returned to winning ways on Tuesday when they defeated Ajax in the Champions League, but the former Red Carragher warned that victory does not necessarily mean his former team has turned a corner.

“They can still contend for the Premier League, no doubt about it,” Carragher said. sports mail.

“But in terms of turning a corner, it takes more than one game. There have been five or six games in which Liverpool have not been anywhere near their best level.

“[Against Ajax] there was a typical Jurgen Klopp performance in Liverpool, but I think they will need more than one game.

“You have to see the next four or five games to see if Liverpool returns to normal. But it was nice to see Liverpool back in their prime.”

There was a big improvement in our performance against the Dutch team compared to our display against Napoli a week earlier.

We were dominated all over the field in Napoli and many of Klopp’s players seemed uninterested.

Against Ajax, however, our hunger to win the ball back when we lost it had returned and we controlled the game for most of the night despite needing a late winner from Joel Matip off The Kop.

Backing up that result is now our next task but, rather frustratingly, we won’t be back in action until October 1, when we welcome Brighton to Anfield.

It would have been nice to try and get into some sort of rhythm before the international break, but our clash with Chelsea today was of course postponed due to preparations for the Queen’s funeral in London on Monday.

Manchester City, the team expected to win their third successive league title this season, look strong and with Erling Haaland finding the back of the net so regularly, it will be hard to stop them.

However, we just have to focus on ourselves for now, and the rest will take care of itself during the season.

After this weekend’s round of matches, the players will head to the international break.

Hopefully all our boys who have been selected by their respective countries can return to Merseyside in top form to give us the best possible chance of a successful run of results before the World Cup in Qatar kicks off in November.
