Jamie Carragher highlights Liverpool defender as Reds’ weak-link vs Leeds United

Jamie Carragher has been unimpressed with Joe Gomez’s performance in the first half against Leeds United.

Saturday night’s Premier League main game at Anfield has so far been an exciting fixture. End-to-end football has seen both teams hit the back of the net, with Spanish attacker Rodrigo opening the scoring after five minutes after a defensive mix-up by Gomez and goalkeeper Alisson.

Despite Mo Salah equalizing just nine minutes later, Leeds United, who are putting up a good fight, could easily be in the lead.

The fierce confrontation seems certain to produce more goals and talking points in the second half, but one player Carragher doesn’t think should remain on the field is Gomez.

“Joe Gomez [has] he’s been all over the place in this first half, he really has,” said Carragher while on duty as a commentator for Sky Sports (approximately 8:33pm UK time).

“He had a really bad first half at Napoli a few weeks ago. [Joel] Matip entered the break. I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw [Ibrahima] Konate at halftime either.”

With Konate and Nat Phillips on the bench, Klopp is not short of defensive options.

However, the former Dortmund manager will be aware that by taking Gomez out early he would risk damaging the Englishman’s confidence, so it will be interesting to see how the German handles this.
