Manchester United legend Jaap Stam has given Harry Maguire some advice in his recent interview.
The Dutchman praised United centre-backs Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez after incredible performances in the last four Premier League games.
“Is it so [Martinez and Varane] doing well; they have a very good association, it is promising.”
“I’ve seen them play, I’ve seen Martínez in Holland and Varane in Madrid, so I hope he can stay fit throughout the season”.
“With Martinez, he’s had a really good couple of games, although you need to do it for a full season.
“You need to play tough for 60 games. If he pulls that off, then we can judge him instead of playing five games. He is a quality player.”
The duo have completely changed United’s fortunes.
After the initial two losses, there were a lot of question marks around the team.
Erik ten Hag was brave enough to turn things around, and now United look like a balanced unit.
Varane has taken the place of Captain Harry Maguire.
Stam challenged the Englishman to prove himself and raise the bar:
“When the [Maguire] he gets his minutes because he’s going to have injuries and suspensions, he needs to take advantage of that opportunity to step in and show himself.”
“The other two are doing well, and that’s how it is in football. You need to train hard and stay sharp.
“If you’re not ready to step in, someone else will play. This is how you raise the bar and the level of football.”
