Is It Too Soon For A Keyshawn Davis Vs. Frank Martin Matchup ?

By Vince Dwriter: 2020 Olympic silver medalist Keyshawn “The Businessman” Davis is a highly touted prospect who doesn’t like being compared to other top prospects due to the fact that he feels like he’s on a different level. Normally, when top prospects turn pro, matchmakers traditionally match the prospect with fighters with limited pro experience or a small amount of success, but Davis is open to fighting experienced fighters who have prevailed inside the ring.

For the fifth fight of his professional career, Keyshawn Davis faced Esteban Sánchez, a lightweight who entered the fight with a record of (18-1, 8 KOs). During the first five rounds of the fight, Davis systematically dropped Sanchez primarily with the jab and lead left hook. In the sixth round, Davis was ready to close out the show when he unleashed a barrage of hooks and uppercuts, forcing the referee to step in and stop the fight. For his sixth pro fight, Davis stepped into the ring with Omar Tienda, a man who had 30 pro fights on his résumé, and of those 30 fights, Tienda was able to come out victorious in 25 of those fights. Unfortunately for Tienda, his opponent was too skilled a fighter, as Davis was able to use Tienda’s aggression against him. In the fifth round of the fight, Tienda stepped forward trying to land a jab, and Davis proceeded to go over the top with a hard right counter. The backlash sent Tienda to the canvas, but Tienda was able to get up. Seconds later, Davis hit Tienda with a combination that dropped Tienda against the ropes. Davis continued the assault until the referee intervened and stopped the contest. Now with a record of (6-0, 5 KOs), the Norfolk, Virginia native is interested in fights that will put him on the fast track from prospect to contender. Keyshawn Davis is a confident, motivated young fighter who isn’t afraid of challenges. The 23-year-old has a high boxing IQ and has the ability to do whatever he wants inside the ring.

Davis is an elite physical talent who has a phenomenal support system as he trains and routinely trains with current WBO welterweight champion Terence “Bud” Crawford. One topic of discussion that is beginning to gain momentum is a potential showdown between Keyshawn Davis and a man who is linked to Terence Crawford’s greatest rival.

Frank “The Ghost” Martin (16-0 12 KOs), is a lightweight prospect who is promoted by unified WBA, WBC and IBF welterweight champion Errol “The Truth” Spence. Martin is a technically sound fighter who has all the tools, and is currently ranked 14th in the WBA. The last time Martin was in the ring, he defeated Jackson Marinez via technical knockout. The first half of the fight was very competitive, but Frank Martin upped the intensity in the seventh round. He dropped Marinez in the ninth and finished him off in the tenth.

Keyshawn Davis is in the early stages of his boxing career, but he looks set to rise to the challenge of navigating his career on the fast track. When Antt, co-host of The Porterway Podcast, mentioned a possible matchup between him and Frank Martin, Davis expressed his brief opinion that the potential matchup was premature for his opponent. “Frank Martin is not ready, man. He is not ready.

Rumors are circulating regarding Frank Martin facing Chris Colbert (16-1, 6 KOs) at some point in the near future. If Martin can get past Colbert, fight fans would love to see a clash between Frank Martin and Keyshawn Davis. Will this fight be the next? Probably not, but these two young phenoms are on a collision course, and sooner or later, this fight is bound to happen.
