(Images) Side-by-side view of controversial penalty calls suggest VAR cost Liverpool in Arsenal defeat

Liverpool’s latest league defeat will have left Jurgen Klopp with even more questions and, frustratingly, fewer answers, as a dire defensive display left the Reds pondering a marked reversal of fortunes from the previous campaign.

However, two controversial calls from Michael Oliver should inspire some sympathy for the German’s men, after Michael Oliver dished out a soft penalty for the hosts while VAR ignored an apparent handball by Gabriel.

Images shared by @TEAMtalk show that Thiago Alcantara’s contact with Gabriel Jesus is almost minimal, while the striker’s Gunners team-mate clearly has his arm raised in an unnatural position after Diogo Jota hits the ball.

We shouldn’t be too devastated by the fact that Mikel Arteta’s men take most of the points, although fairer decision-making by the referee on the pitch, and better observations from Stockley Park, would surely have yielded a less painful result for visitors.
