Iker Casillas Mocked the Spanish Media by Calling Himself ‘Gay’

Iker Casillas, legend of Real Madrid, has been honest about his sexuality of being gay. Of all the known gay footballers, Casillas’ sudden coming out makes him the highest-profile name in the world of football.

There are many names that do not support homosexual footballers in the locker room. Casillas has the support of former Barcelona legend and teammate Carles Puyol.

Iker Casillas is considered one of the great names in men’s football. The legendary Spanish goalkeeper won a World Cup in 2010 and two European Championships with Spain at National level.

But it was more impressive with Real Madrid where he won it all. At the Santiago Bernabéu he won three Champions Leagues and five LaLigas in the 25 years of his life at Real. In total, he lifted 19 trophies with Los Blancos after joining them at the age of 9.

Following Raúl’s departure, Casillas became team captain from 2010 to 2015. The former Spain captain retired in 2020 after suffering cardiac arrest while training at the last club of his career, Porto.

He is without a doubt the best goalkeeper in Spain to date. In a tweet on Sunday afternoon, the former Real Madrid captain said: “I hope you respect me: I’m gay.” After leaving him on Twitter, he received a lot of support in the comment.

But he surprised many fans, as Casillas dated beauty pageant winner Eva González and famous journalist Carbonero in the past. The goalkeeper kissed Carbonero during the post-match interview after winning the 2010 World Cup by beating the Netherlands in extra time.

She ended up marrying Carbonero in 2016. Together they had two sons: Martín and Lucas. Their partnership lasted five years before announcing their split last March.

Mockery?

Homosexuality is a sensitive issue like racism in football. Casillas’ private life and the rumors of his courtship with the actress Alejandra Onieva were hot news in the Spanish media. This type of false rumors harm the social life of the former goalkeeper.

The surprise tweet of “I’m gay. #HappySunday” was nothing more than irony. This publication was to make fun of the Spanish media for leaking false information about his private life that grew after his breakup with Sara Carbonero.

The tweet is also deleted after receiving more than 200,000 likes in less than an hour. The media also linked the soccer player’s name to that of Shakira, Melyssa Pinto and Rocío Osorno.

This may be teasing, but it can hurt the feelings of the LGBTQ community. No reaction has come out of your community yet.
